The first-generation XT 600Z Ténéré was launched at the Paris show in October 1982 and named after the desert section of the Paris-Dakar Rally. It combined the 595 cc air/oil-cooled single with a huge 28-litre tank, long-travel suspension, a front disc and Yamaha's Monocross rear suspension. It was heavy and kick-start only, but praised for low-down torque and touring ability.
